"Joe? Is that you? The woman speaking to me at the baseball game looked a little familiar."Marci?' I asked.

"It is you !" she cried out, smiling broadly. "Gosh. it's good to see you again !"

It was good to see Marci, too. Off and on during the past few decades. I’ve wondered about her. I almost tried to search for her a few years ago after talking to a friend who had indicated that the 1990s had been pretty rough for Marci. So meeting her at the baseball game was really out of expectation.

We spent a few minutes talking about our lives--the good old, bad old days. Then Marci grew quiet for a moment. "You know, Joe," she said. " I've always wanted to tell you...how...how sorry I am for the way I treated you. You must have been hurt both physically and mentally." I was a little embarrassed. I turned and looked at her. "It's OK," I said, "No big deal!" "But I was such a jerk" she continued. Yes you were. I thought.. "We were both pretty young." I smiled. "I know." she said. "It's just always

bothered me, remembering how mean I was to you. And I've wanted to tell you that I'm sorry."

The expression on her face was warm and sincere. And there was something in her eyes-it looked a lot like relief. "OK," I said. "Apology accepted!" Overcome by the sweetness f the moment. I reached an arm around her and gave her a quick hug. Just then, the crowd erupted with a huge cheer, and Marci and I both returned our attention to the game. By the time I looked over to where she had been, she was

gone. But the warm, wonderful feeling of our brief exchange was still there, and continues to this day whenever I think about it.

It isn't enough to just say "1'm sorry" and "You're forgiven." But when those words are truly felt and sincerely expressed, they can open the door to miracles of the heart. Forgiveness can bring peace to an injured soul---even years after the fact. Even at a baseball game.

21. What kind of life did Marci live during the late 20th century according to the passage?

A. Happy.            B. Busy.         C. Hard.         D. Simple.

A. A humorous person.           B. A cruel person.

C. A careless person.            D. An honest person.

23. Why did Maori look in relief after talking with the author?

A. Because her favorite team won the game.

B. Because she learned Joe was living a good life.

C. Because she made an apology to the author.

D. Because she found she was not mean any longer.

24. What might be the best title for the passage?

A. Excitement of A Baseball Game     B. Mental Burden of A Woman

C. Relief of finding A friend          D. Miracles of Forgiveness

The production of coffee beans is a huge, profitable business, but, unfortunately, full-sun production is taking over the industry and bringing about a lot of damage. The change in how coffee is grown from shade-grown production to full-sun production endangers the very existence of certain animals and birds, and even disturbs the world's ecological balance.

On a local level, the damage of the forest required by full-sun fields affects the area's birds and animals. The shade of the forest trees provides a home for birds and other species(物种) that depend on the trees' flowers and fruits. Full-sun coffee growers destroy this forest home. As a result, many species are quickly dying out.

On a more global level, the destruction of the rainforest for full-sun coffee fields also threatens(威胁)human life. Medical research often makes use of the forests' plant and animal life, and the destruction of such species could prevent researchers from finding cures for certain diseases. In addition, new coffee-growing techniques are poisoning the water locally, and eventually the worlds groundwater.

Both locally and globally, the continued spread of full-sun coffee plantations (种植园)could mean the destruction of the rainforest ecology. The loss of shade trees is already causing a slight change in the world's climate, and studies show that loss of oxygen-giving trees also leads to air pollution and global warming. Moreover, the new growing techniques are contributing to acidic(  酸性的) soil conditions.

It is obvious that the way much coffee is grown affects many aspects of life, from the local environment to the global ecology. But consumers do have a choice. They can purchase shade-grown coffee whenever possible, although at a higher cost. The future health of the planet and mankind is surely worth more than an inexpensive cup of coffee.

29. What can we [cam about full-sun coffee production from Paragraph 4?

A. It limits the spread of new growing techniques.

B. It leads to air pollution and global warming.

C. It slows down the loss of shade trees.

D. It improves local soil conditions.

30. The purpose of the text is to______

C. An engineering textbook.                    D. A tourist guide.

32. Which of the following shows the structure of the whole text?   (p: paragraph)

D

Parents who help their children with homework may actually be bringing down their school grades. Other forms of prenatal involvement, including volunteering at school and observing a child's class, also fail to help, according to the most recent study on the topic.

The findings challenge a key principle of modern parenting(养育子女) where schools except them to act as partners in their children's education. Previous generations concentrated on getting children to school on time, fed, dressed and ready to learn.

Kaith Robinson, the author of the study, said, "I really don't know if the public is ready for this but there are some ways parents can be involved in their kids' education that leads to declines in their academic performance. One of the things that was consistently negative was parents' help with homework." Robinson suggested that may be because parents themselves struggle to understand the task." They may either not remember the material their kids are studying now, or in some cases never learnt it themselves, but they're still offering advice."

Robinson assessed parental involvement performance and found one of the most damaging things a parent could do was to punish their children for poor marks. In general, about 20% of parental involvement was positive, about 45% negative and the rest statistically insignificant.

Common sense suggests it was a good thing for parents to get involved because "children with good academic success do have involved parents ", admitted Robinson. But he argued that this did not prove parental involvement was the root cause of that success." A big surprise was that Asian-American parents whose kids are doing so well in school hardly involved. They took a more reasonable approach, conveying to their children how success at school could improve their lives."

33.'Ihe underlined expression' parental involvement" in Paragraph I probably means_________

A. parents' expectation on children's health

B. parents' participation in children's education

C. parents' control over children's life

D. parents' plan fix children's future

34. What is the major finding of Robinson's study?

A. Modern parents raise children in a more scientific way.

B. Punishing kids for had marks is mentally damaging.

C. Parental involvement is not so beneficial as expected.

D. Parents are not able to help with children's homework.

35. The example of Asian-American parents implies that parents should______

A. help children realize the importance of schooling

阅读理解

A few years ago, pop poets such as Murray Lachlan Young began to set poetry to rock music with some surprising results. People thought that poetry was the new rock ‘n’ roll. However, despite the brief popularity of a few pop poets, poetry and pop music didn’t seem to mix. But are they really so different?

If you look back at the origins of poetry, there is a strong connection between poems and popular music. In Greek mythology, for example, the muse (女神) Erato is pictured with a lyre (里拉琴) in her hand, and looks just like the ancestor of the modern rock star with his electric guitar. In addition, the poets Shelley and Byron were as famous in the nineteenth century as the pop stars of today.

But despite their common origins, there are many differences between poetry and pop music. Pop songs are always written for a public performance, whereas poetry often isn’t. And the lyrics in pop songs sometimes have less rhythm than those in poetry. This is because the music provides the rhythm rather than the words. Pop lyrics are also simpler and often keep on saying the same thing. This repetition works well in a performance and means that pop songs are easier for people to sing and learn by heart.[来源:Z#xx#k.Com]

Both songs and poems tell a story or talk about feelings. Songs in particular deal with the different stages in a relationship, such as falling in love or breaking up. The words and ideas in songs are usually easier to understand than those in “serious” poetry. However, talented performers like Paul McCartney, or newer stars like Robbe Williams, often give simple songs more expression when they perform them. And some of the best lines from pop lyrics are as beautiful as poetry.

So although pop music and poetry have many differences, they do have one important thing in common: the power to make us think about how we feel.

61. What did Murray Lachlan Young do a few years ago?

A. He had poems and rock music combined.

B. He surprised people with his beautiful style of writing.[来源:,,]

C. He wrote beautiful music for some famous poems.

D. He invented a new kind of poem for his fans.

62. According to the article. the difference between poetry and pop songs is that__

A. there is more rhythm in pop songs than poetry

B. pop songs arc more difficult to understand than poetry

C. some words in pop songs arc repeated over and over again

D. pop songs are not always performed before audience

63. According to Paragraph 4. which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Songs and poems are equally beautiful.

R. The main theme of songs is about relationship.

C. Songs tell stories but poems tell about feelings.

D. Songs and poems express a similar message.

64. What dots the writer say about talented performers today?

A. They look at poetry to find ideas for their songs.

B. They think their songs are more serious than poetry.

C. They give songs more meaning when they sing them.

D. They consider themselves to be more popular than poets.
